Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan has launched an initiative to improve education performance standards for all students in Anchorage public schools. The goal is to raise the achievement bar so that Anchorage high school graduates are competitive in the international workplace. Anchorage, because of its unique location, is more directly involved with international trading partners than most other American cities. It is important that Anchorage students be held to a higher standard, such as the other of Pacific Rim countries. It is not enough for educational success to be defined by mediocre standards of other American cities. The initiative will span seven months during which Anchorage citizens and education policy makers will come together to develop and advocate ways in which we can achieve this goal. Community Conversations In February 2012, Phase II of the Mayors Education Summit, will begin, with 6 Community Conversations around Anchorage. In these conversations citizens will be asked to review the preliminary scenarios that were identified by the participants in the November Summit. These scenarios identify ways to improve student performance. The scenarios are: World-class leadership: teachers and principals; Community engagement and commitment; Set great expectations for student success; and Expand choice and opportunity for all. Participants will discuss the approach and steps they think Anchorage should take, including the choices and trade-offs that will be required, in order for Anchorages schools to become among the nations best. The community conversations will take place on six dates in February. The CD was produced by Matt LaPlant who has also produced record selling CDs for other popular rock bands such as Nonpoint and Skindred. The entire CD is very well written and produced with 4 or 5 potential singles including the title track "Burn It Down", the crossover song "Memory", the blood pumping song "Energy", and the rock anthem "Come And Get It". The band is currently shopping the album to a number of record companies and will hopefully land a new home soon.

Saturdays are an Acoustic Showcase from 7pm till 11pm, featuring various rotating artists from around the state and lower 48. This year we have artists from Austin, Florida, Hawaii, Minnesota and California coming out to join some of Alaska's finest musicians on stage. A big shout out needs to go to the Eagle River Alehouse for giving us artists a perfect venue to perform our art at! Come in and try the food and drink! Wednesdays are Open mic starting at 6pm. It fills up fast both nights so if your coming out to join us, you might consider getting there a little early to get a good seat. Discover Ski and Snowboard Program offers an affordable way to ski or snowboard Alyeska Resort for all levels of youth TO REGISTER FOR THIS PROGRAM, CLICK ON "VISIT OUR WEBSITE" OR http://www.alyeskaresort.com/mountain/learning-center-discover-program.aspx October 25, 2011 (Girdwood, Alaska) In an effort to promote winter activity amongst children and teens, Alyeska Resort announces the 2011/12 Discover Ski and Snowboard Program. Designed for children ages eight and through high school, the Discover Program teaches the sport of skiing or snowboarding in an affordable package and within a safe environment. Registration for the Discover Program begins online Tuesday, November 1, 2011. In total, there are three program options. Parents can choose from two levels of ski or snowboard instruction or an all-mountain free ski/ride option. The program includes three visits to Alyeska Resort on consecutive Saturdays or Sundays in January, February or April of 2012. For parents choosing programs including lessons, either beginner or intermediate, children will be enrolled in two hours of instruction in the morning, followed by a lunch break (lunch not included) with a free period in the afternoon for unchaperoned free skiing or riding. Optional afternoon lessons are also available for an additional fee on a week by week basis. The Discover Lower Mountain With Lesson Program costs $160 per student and includes a lower mountain lift ticket, two hour beginner lesson and transportation to/from Anchorage and Eagle River. Rental skis or snowboard gear is available for an additional $30 per student. For students of intermediate abilities, the Discover Upper Mountain With Lesson Program provides the same format as the beginner level with more advanced instruction, an all-mountain lift ticket and roundtrip transportation. This program is available for $205 including equipment rental or $175 without rentals. The Discover Upper Mountain Without Lesson Program is designed for all-mountain skiers or snowboarders seeking a bundled savings.
