Description:
Surreal Studios is the destination for serious album recording in Alaska.
Producer / engineer Kurt Riemann has produced / engineered over 450 albums, a list that's too far long to put up here, but a list that includes some of the most notable and influential musicians in Alaska. Native American Music Award-winning albums from Medicine Dream and Pamyua. From the Anchorage Symphony to some of the hardest rock to rattle your windows. Singer-songwriters like Melissa Mitchell. Surreal Studios is the destination for enduring work.
Producing bands is why Surreal exists. It's one of the few studios in Alaska capable of recording an entire band at once, with large rooms and great sounds. Sessions run smoothly with the spacious control room and great communication system to the musicians in the studio.
The studio was designed by renowned studio architect Jeff Cooper, who literally wrote the book on studio design. In the control room you will find a complete selection of world-class preamps from API, Summit and Great River - the front end to the ProTools HD system. We're the studio that's called when film companies and other studios Outside need the best they can find in Alaska to match tracks. The vast microphone collection includes a wide variety of vintage Neumann, AKG and Sennheiser standards, and producer / engineer Kurt Riemann is not afraid to use them.
Riemann finds great satisfaction in producing full bands and especially in creating label-quality drum sounds. He is in demand as a tracking engineer, often tracking drums with our collection mikes, pres and room sounds for sessions that other studios will use as a basis for overdubs, saving time, money and aggravation.
As one client recently said, "It's got a vibe that reminds you of some place you'd see on 'Behind the Music.' We looked around and chose Surreal, hands down."
While it's a high-end studio, that doesn't mean that there is anything delicate about his approach to Rock. Riemann has traded licks with the best, working in Surreal Studios with producers such as Gordon Gano of Violent Femmes and recently with Josiah Gluck of GRP / Saturday Night Live.
One of the myths about recording is that you need to spend a lot to use a great studio. Working at Surreal costs no more than other studios in Alaska. And often it costs less because when you start with something that sounds great, you don't need to fix what isn't broken. We wouldn't have that long list of clients if recording their albums cost too much.
There's nothing worse than being in a studio that can only do an impression of what you want. Don't spend a bundle trying to get it right. Get it right.
