11/02/2011 - ANO REVIEW: SNO WHITE HALLOWEEN MASSIVE
ANO REVIEW:
Sno White Halloween Massive by 'A Dose of Know-How'
written by Jeremie Fincher

The Egan Center had an unbelievable turnout on Friday night. The "Sno White Halloween Massive," put on by local promoter 'A Dose of Know-How,' sold out the event arena- 1800 tickets. The Halloween party of the year lived up to its name almost immediately. Massive. This incredible demonstration of professional promotion blew me away. Three giant rooms full of brain-vibrating sound, psychedelic lights and lasers, and barely dressed, or strangely dressed, grinding, flashing, pulsing, sweating bodies. The feature and theme of the evening was Sno White, a female dubtrip DJ from Texas, who put on an amazing show on the main stage, 'The Castle.' There were also two live acts (Contact was fabulous), and an array of local DJs. The other two rooms, 'The Woods,' (21+ bar and wooded theme) and 'Dubstep Dungeon,' were equally entertaining.
I could tell this party was a promotion MONSTER as I approached the Egan Center. It looked like the Egan's Beer and Barley-wine Festival, lined up around the block, except everyone was in costume, and a good 65% of them weren't old enough to drink. (I personally thank the promoter, in light of the latter observation, that there happened to be a bar/beer garden.) Apparently, a whopping seven months worth of word of mouth and social medium promotion, radio advertisement support, and 10,000 handout flyers pay off.

I figured for sure I would feel completely out-of-place amongst dozens of flush-skinned children, slobbering on pacifiers and ring-pops, but I had an easy enough time loosening up. The under-agers, saucer-sized pupils and flashing and blinking like robots, were all strictly enforced to a curfew. If you were under 18, and you were out the door by 1:00 AM, enforced by an ID check and corresponding wristband issued at the door. Age enforcement was handled professionally and courteously when it came to the curfew, and also alcohol. Some kid snuck into the Beer Garden early on, got busted, and was politely asked to leave the venue. (Don't break the rules, dude.)
The rooms were each themed, and minimally, but tastefully decorated. It seemed the focus of the evening was the music. There was plenty to see, anyway, with the attire that showed up in light of the holiday. (My favorite costume of the evening was a Na'vi from the movie Avatar.) The main stage, The Castle, had 500+ people dancing their asses off at any given time, and that is probably a conservative guess. This was the most decorated room, as it had a screen for visuals, lasers, an elaborate 'castle' set-up for the DJ tables, and an elevated dancing stage that displayed a handful of dancers at a time.

I found myself occupying 'The Woods' more often than not. The 21+ room had a few hard-at-work, friendly bartenders, a lighter volumed dance atmosphere, and was a breath of fresh air. It seemed like the place to do any sort of socializing as an adult, as the hallways of the Egan were filled with minors, and the other rooms were far too loud to carry on any oral communication. You know the kind of darkness where you cannot see your own hand in front of your face? These rooms were so loud, I couldn't see anything at all, because my eyeballs were vibrating inside their sockets. It was an exhilarating experience. I've never felt my bones vibrating before.
The downstairs room, the Dubstep Dungeon, had a large congregation outside its doors. A flock of video game characters, animals, ninjas, pirates, etc. wreaking of Vicks Vapor Rub and chugging bottled water. Some were sprawled on the carpet, or in mass group-hugs. It was a truly bizarre sight. And mirror, mirror on the wall, the Dubstep Dungeon was the loudest of them all. It was also felt the most tightly packed. Even though the dance thing was never my scene, this place made me feel 18 again.

Sno White's performance stood out amongst all the DJs that night. There was a reason 'A Dose of Know-How' signed her. There had to be 1000 people dancing during that set. She was pulling off some crazy sounds on top of some heavy beats, and full-on dancing behind the tables while she did it. What a sight! My brain was warped by the dubstep massacre that ensued. This was not to say there wasn't some terrific music besides the Lady of the Evening. Clint Samples and Clever Disguise were my favorite local DJs showcased. Also, a shout-out to Darrin Huycke, who was elemental in orchestrating everything as stage manager. Good job, buddy.
Another Egan show has been announced for March 10th, 2012. 'SPiN' featuring Matt Darey, StoneBridge, EC Twins, & a special surprise guest headliner, is sure to be a sell-out success. Look out, Anchorage. 'A Dose of Know-How' knows how to throw a party.

Glad you could make sure the stereotypes of kids with pacifiers, vaporub, etc were all included in the review. ::rolleyes::
